Medieval Castles
In the 1100's to 1500's stone castles were built in Europe to defend the country from invaders and preserve the king's and noble's power over the land. The castle was both a residence and a fortification for the lord and his family. It allowed him to defend himself, a safe place for him and his knights to come home to, and also a place to live that emphasized his power. Wood and stone were the only material available for building. Slate and thatch were used for roofs, but not the walls. A stone castle needs very little maintenance once it is built. Unfortunately, stone castles are very unpleasant to live in. Usually castles were built on high ground, and there were risks of attacks from different directions but the elevation made it easier to see. Medieval castles also included herb gardens, fruit trees, and fish ponds.
